Gegenüber liegt die laotische Stadt Savannakhet, von der aus einmal pro Woche ein Passagierschiff nach Viangchan (Vientiane) fährt. Die neue, 1600 m lange Zweite Thai-Lao Freundschaftsbrücke über den Mekong nach Savannakhet wurde am 9.1.2007 eröffnet. Sie schafft die Straßenverbindung nach Vietnam und bringt mehr Leben in die Stadt.
