Nakhon Ratchasima, shortly Korat (or Khorat), is one of the largest cities in the Northeast with a population of 208,000 people. It plays an important role as a transportation hub and commercial center between the highlands in the Northeast and Bangkok. The American Air Force was established here, the numerous night clubs and bars in the city remind us of these times. Nakhon Ratchasima is the first place situated on the high plateau and a good starting point for tours.
It is something quite special to go shopping in high quality shops located in the mall north of the city, to walk through huge bazaars, to feast on the uncountable food stalls, to go to the most modern cinema or to take a ride on the giant slides in the water paradise.
Remains of the ancient fortification have been preserved in the city center of the noisy and busy old town. The former city wall with a length of 170 meters and a width of 1500 meters, the moat and some ruins lead to the conclusion that a significant city must have been located here during the 8th to 10th century.
The Khun Ying Mo Monument (Thao Suranari) is situated in front of the city gate, between Ratchdamnoen and Chumphon Road. She defended the city against the Laotian invaders who attacked Khorat in 1826, while most men were away at the war with Burma. The bronze monument was erected in 1934 and it holds the ashes of the highly revered woman. The local people always decorate it with flowers and wreaths and also bring offerings.
The Maha Wirawong Museum located in the court yard of Wat Suthachinda displays a great collection of Khmer artwork and excavation finds from ancient times. Open from Wednesday to Sunday from 9 h to 16 h, entrance fee 10 baht. Next to the shrine, in the city center (Lak Muang) on Chumphon Road, corner Prachak Road, a bas-relief made of clay tiles can be seen on a house wall which looks very impressive from afar. The bot of Wat Sala Loi (about 500 meters east of the northeastern corner of the city wall) resembles the shape of an antique junk boat, the front is a bas-relief made of metal-ceramic.
The Zoo, situated 18 km outside of town, is set in a large and naturally landscaped area. It is home to almost all of Thailand's animals. There are bicycles for rent. It can be reached by bus no. 14 in front of Wat Sakae on Suranari Road.

The Sakol Hotel is a 5-storey townhouse with elevator located in the old town. The rooms are decent and clean, many travelers like to come here. Be warned – don't take room 501: Just next to it is a noisy water pump!
