Full Moon Party took place for the first time in 1987. It was someone's birthday and around 50 people attended the party. The beauty and atmosphere and, of course, the full moon vibe made the night a big success. So people decided to celebrate every month and the popularity grew and grew.
Note: The party people back then were hippies and freaks, people among the first to come to Thailand at a time when techno was just about to be invented.
With growing national and international popularity the visitor numbers grew, too. Hat Rin struggled to keep up with this development, as the infrastructure was not there.
Most freaks and hippies have now moved on to other places and left Hat Rin to the newer, hipper international jet set crowd.
Alcohol and drugs have been part of the party ever since the beginning and they are still nowadays (Don't forget: There are hefty fines on drugs in Thailand). But with the fame of the party there was also curiosity among the normal people. So today you can sometimes find more people there just looking around than people actually celebrating. Plus, the Thais in that area show the effects of years and years of party life. Only rarely do you find a smile here.
Up to 30000 people show up for the party. The bad side effects are obvious: Noise, masses of people, trash have turned a former paradise into a center of party and commerce.
If you've never seen it, go once. If you are looking for a good party, there are definitely better options.

Haad Yao Bay View offers spacious and well-equipped bungalows with seaview. The resort was built in 2006 and is one of the most luxurious on the island.
There is a big pool between the beach and the restaurant. All rooms are equipped with aircon, minibar and hot water.

See Through is a brandnew hotel, coming in an exceptional design. The tropical garden makes for a paradise like atmosphere.
The resot has 26 rooms which are located right on the beach. The rooms are modernly furnitured and equipped with all comfort.
There are a restaurant and a bar right on the beach with Thai and Western specialties. In the bar you can also play pool or enoy movies on screen.
There are 3 room categories: seaview deluxe, poolside deluxe and pool side sea view deluxe. All rooms come with a safety box, flatscreen TV, minibar, aircon and warm showers. The rooms are decorated with marble, giving them an even more luxurious look.

Haad Son Resort offers bungalows as well as rooms in a modernly designed hotel building.
The suites all have nice views and a private balcony and are designed with plenty of colour.
You have your own little private beach here, as there is only this resort in close proximity.
The adjacent Koh Raham Restaurant is very nicely decorated and sits on top of the cliffs. Here you can eat seafood or just catch it yourself on the pier built for exactly that.
Facilities include: restaurant, internet in the rooms, convenience store, international phone, swimming pool.

Sea Garden Resort is peacefully located near the Hat Rin and Full Moon parties. The resort can offer a wide-range of accommodation options from cheap fan bungalows and rooms to luxury Air-Con suites with large private bathroom, hot water, minibar, TV and stereo. There are a total of 30 rooms and bungalows to choose from, all with private bathroom.
