Activities in and around Doi Saket


The vicinity of Doi Saket has a lot to offer. There are dams, hot springs, a botanical garden and the handicraft center of North Thailand is just around the corner. Golfers, cyclers and those who enjoy zipline parks, ballooning or ultra light flights will find it in Doi Saket.  All set amidst ricefields at the foot of the mountain range.
Mae Kuang Dam and Mae Ngat Dam

Mae Kuang Dam is closer to Doi Saket than Mae Ngat Dam. Both offer picturesque views on the surrounding mountains. You can rent a boat for 400 Baht per hour and tour the lake. Small Thai restaurants are located at the shore.

Mae Ngat Dam offers great mountain views. Part of the dam is accessible. You can rent kayaks, do longtailboat tours, go fishing and stay in floating bungalows. Some Thai resturants are right by the lake.


San Kamphaeng Hot Springs

The geysir is bewtween Doi Saket and San Kamphaeng. The spring is about 110 C° and cooled sown to 45 degrees. There are private bath houses, a swimming pool, a restaurant, foodstalls where you can buy eggs to boil and other things to accompany your pick-nick, so just spread out a towel and bathe your feet in hot water.
On Saturdays San Kamphaneg Walking Street takes place - a must for market lovers

The San Kamphaeng Hot Spring is located in a nice park. The hot spring is cooled down to swimming temperature in the bathing houses and the swimming pool (extra fee applies). A stream runs along a part of the park and you can bathe your feet. Food stalls offer quail eggs and hen eggs that can be boiled in the hot spring, try a spicy Papaya Salad (Som Tam( with your eggs. A restaurant is also part of the park along with several souvenir stands that sell soap and shampoos of all kinds.

Sturday Walking Street in San Kamphaeng starts around 16.00 and closes at 22.00. The local vendors offer their handicrafts, fresh veggies, herbs, clothes,plastic ware and of course loads of food food food.....Make sure you get there before 18.00 and observe the National anthem at 6, when there is a three minute stand still as everybody listens carefully.


National Parks

Doi Saket is close to Chae Son National Park, which is in Lampang Province and Mae Takrai National Park. Both National parks have great hiking opportunities, waterfalls and accommodations (tents or bungalows). For those who want to chill out in nature I can recommend to visit Tharnthong Lodges, either spend the night or just come to the lovely restaurant- time won´t find you here - is their slogan. If you follow the road further it leads you to Mae Kampong, turn left andd follow the signs to the waterfall.

Mae Takrai National Park (อุทยานแห่งชาติแม่ตะไคร้) (ChiangMaiProvince)

Mae Ta Krai National Park covers and area of Chiang Mai and Lampang provinces. The total area is about 2,500 square kms. The park is located in Mae-On sub district. From Chiang Mai you take H1317 towards Mae-On, at KM21 turn right to H1006. At Ban Pao Sam Kha turn right and follow H1229, you will reach the checkpoint after 4 kms. then go for another 10 kms until you reach the entrance to the Park.
The mountains at Mae Takrai National Park rise to an altitude of 1,900 meters. Rainfall all year round makes the forest lush and green. The park has two waterfalls and you can hike to a reservoir that can be fished in and Phu Lnka Luang is the 5th highest mountain in Thailand. The park has a campsite but you have to bring your own tents.

Mae Kamphong Waterfall is just behind the small village Mae Kamphog. Easily accessible by car, you can already hear the water falling down when you get off your vehicle. It takes you about 5 minutes to walk there. Swimming in the ponds is possible. No entrance fee.


Doi Saket Hot Springs and Huai Hong Krai Agricultural Project

Doi Saket Hot Spring is located about 1 0kms north of Doi Saket. The geysir is cooled down to 45 degrees and you have a few bath houses you can rent. The villagers have designed the little park with its restaurants and coffee shops. It is the place to meet for the locals especially on weekends.
Huai Hong Krai Agricultural Project is a royal project that stretches on an enormous plot of land and shows the visitors Thai agricultural research.

Doi Saket Hot Springs are about 10 kms north of Doi Saket in the village of Ban Pong Kum. The little park has been created by the local villagers around the hot spring. There are bath houses for rent where you can take a bath in the cooled down hot stream. (50 Baht per hour)A Massage parlour offering Thai, Oil and Foot Massage is also there. Simple Thai restaurants and coffee shops are located in the neat park. Doi Saket Hot Springs are hardly ever visited by tourists, if you want a glance of local live- it is best to go here on the weekends.


Doi Saket Botanical Garden

Tweechol Botanic Garden is worth a visit. Rent a bike or a caddy at the entrance and explore the nice surroundings. The garden is home to many species of palm trees, bromide and other tropical plants. A museum shows the ancient Lana way of living.  For those who want to go swimming, you can use the pool at a fee of 120 Baht p.P.

Tweechol Botanic Garden is part of Horizon Resort. The garden is situated on 114 acres of land (286 Rai)and displays 107 kind of palm trees, sukkulents and bromelias along with orchids and other tropical flowers. There is a petting zoo, a lake to paddle on and an artificial waterfall in the park. Horse riding is offered and a children´s playground is part of Tweechol Botanic Garden as well as a museum that explains the ancient Laana way of life and shows antiques of the old Laana Kingdom. The entracen Fee is 80 Baht and the rent for a bicycle is 30 Baht for 2 hours. Golf Carts can be rented at 300 Baht per hour. Camping grounds are on the premises and for a fee of 130 Baht per adult you can relax at the pool after you have visited the gardens.

Wat Phratat Doi Saket is the main temple of the village. Majestically located on a hill the temple can be seen from far away. You can either take the stairs that lead to the top of the hill or the road that commences behind the market. The yellow songthaews also take you up there. You can also find a coffee shop and a massage place on the area. After visiting the main temple you can go further up the hill you get to the construction site of the temple´s extension. Not many people are up here. You can find cages with birds, rabbits and various other small animals. The new part of the temple is supposed to be finished by 2015.

Did you ever want to know how umbrellas were made? Do you want to see one of the last shops that works with rose wood? Interested in silver? Visit the village of BOSANG.
Visit the Handicraft Village Bosang with its many shops. The small market at the  traffic light offers nitty gritty bits and pieces, there are clothes shops, a porcelain manufacturer, weavers, silk producers and tailors, lacquer ware, teak and rose wood furniture stores, silver ware stores as well as Thailand´s biggest jewellery shop. Best to drive yourself or take a taxi, they offer half day tours for approx. 500 Baht (per taxi).
These shops are just a recommendation, there are several more - just explore Bosang on your own or with your chauffeur - you won´t miss them.
