Local Transport

Tuk tuks, motorcycle rikshaws and songthaeos

A short trip in the city center costs 20 baht by tuk tuk or songthaeo. From the bus terminal at the Highway the fare to the city is 60 Baht. Motorcycle rickshaw costs 10-30 Baht.

A sightseeing program of the widely spread out places of interest in the historic Ayutthaya will take about a day by tuk tuk or songthaeo. Tours cost about 200 Baht per hour. Most of the drivers who try to get customers at the railway station or the bus terminals have not much information. It is better to ask your guesthouse to recommend a driver.

City buses

The air-con city bus no. 5 runs between the large shopping complex Ayutthaya Park, the bus terminal and the city center for 7 Baht. It also stops at the market, as well as bus no. 6. The latter goes from the City Hall and the Tourist Office to Hua Ro Market and Chandra Kasem-Palace.

Ferries

Two ferries run from the bus terminal to the city for 3 Baht. Besides that, there are ferries crossing the river to Wat Phanan Choeng.

Boats

At the boat pier behind Wat Phanan Choeng and opposite Chandra Kasem Palace you can rent boats for 6-10 people for round trips. The rate is about 300-400 baht per hour. Only small boats can navigate on the shallow Menam Lopburi.

The converted rice barge Siam Thanee embarks from Sai Thong River Restaurant daily at 13.30 h and 19 h for a one hour trip, fare 100 Baht per person. This boat can be also chartered.
Bicycles

Bicycle rental in guesthouses for 30-50 Baht and at the tourist police for 50 Baht per day. A beautiful cycling tour leads from the old town westwards and then to the south to Wat Chai Wattanaram, the ruins of a large temple complex with many Prangs built in Khmer style. Continue along the river to the southeast, just before Wat Phanan Choeng you can cross the river with a ferry.  Be aware of thieves who steal bags from bicycle baskets and it is also recommended to visit the temples which are located further away only in groups. We have heard of mugging and cheating, where tourists have lost money.
