On a sunny day this will become a most memorable day of your holiday.
The first 34 km are just home turf, nothing special for this day. Then don't miss the turnoff to the north (straight on leads east to Khao Sok and Koh Samui on H401).

Soon the first solitary beautiful trees beside the road come into view. OK, you may take pictures, but don't forget: there are at least 100 remarkable trees along this route, esp. from February to April when they are in full red and yellow bloom.

Just as an indication: Last time I travelled this route, the battery of my Panasonic GPS camera was empty before reaching Khuraburi, just 40 km ahead.
Today we use our travelling time just for the road and its attractions, no side trips, they have to wait for a separate trip to Ranong only.
Around noon you will reach Ranong where we recommend to have lunch at the restaurant next to the hot springs -- excellent original Thai food, so please order "mai chop phet, krap" or simply "mai phet" when the waiter asks you if you like it spicy.
After the walk around the hot springs -- maybe dip your feet in one of the lower basins or relax on the warm floor of the large sala -- you are ready for the second leg of this day.
You have 3 options to choose from  driving to La-Un:
-- the eastern route: continue on this country road and drive leisurely between the mountains,
-- the middle route: drive back to the highway H4 and after making the U-turn continue due north, passing Punyaban Waterfall after app. 29 km, a very impressive sight after rain,
-- the western route: drive slowly on the main street through Ranong and follow the signs to Ranong Port, a good road that takes you eventually north with some great views of the Fjord and some vistas of Burmese jungle across.
All three route options join at La-Un where you turn to the right onto H4091 (Thung Tako 62 km, Chumphon 113 km).
From this turn-off the road H4091, later H4139, winds more and more into some spectacular mountain scenery.
