Ban Dan Kwian (or Kwien) At the river near the potters' village, rust-coloured clay is found which is being processed into beautiful and very inexpensive pottery. The earthenware is exhibited along the road, so you cannot miss the village. The potters who live further inland use only simple tools and produce jugs, vases, stools, tiles, lampshades, reliefs and sculptures which are baked in earth ovens. However, most items are too big and heavy for carrying around. But it is also possible to send the goods, the charge will be by cubic measure not by weight.
It is also worthwhile to stroll through the side lanes. Just at the right side of the village entrance you can have a look at turnery and numerous Asian carts. This recommended trip to the potters' village situated at KM 15 on H24 is best done by bus no. 1307, it departs every 30 minutes from Pratu Pi.
Prasat Phanom Wan On H2, about 15 km northeast of Korat, a road turns off to the Wat Phanom Wan Sanctuary (7 km, by songthaew). The central temple has been built in the beginning of the 10th century, some parts of the small complex have been here already 100 years earlier. The heavily destroyed temple houses Buddha statues from various periods and until today offerings are brought. The completely damaged gallery which has been partially filled in metres-high with rubble and rootage, has been restaured. Prasat Phanom Wan cannot be compared to the impressive dimensions and beautiful reliefs of Phimai, it seems rather like a peaceful gem.
The new monastery which is built next door features many trees and animals, it almost seems like a large farm. The facades of the modern temple are decorated with colourful painted bas-reliefs. Modern and artistically attractive frescos which display the life of Buddha and a portrait of the old teacher of the monastery, Phra Khru Phanom Phanaa Phirat adorn the inside. Minibus 4139 to Phanom Wan departs from Pratu Nam in the north of the old town (fare is 12 baht).
Ban Prasat In the village Ban Prasat, situated northeast of Korat (at KM 44), 1.5 km from H2, excavations were carried out by the Department of Fine Arts. Finds from prehistoric times (about 3000 years ago), from the Dvaravati period (1600 – 1800 years ago) and in Khmer style (600 years ago) came into light. The finds from two archaeological sites can only be seen at their original place. A small museum provides various information about the excavation works, rural ceremonies related to spirit house and rice goddess as well as fishing and weaving. Explanations in English are provided. No entrance fee, donations are welcome. Souvenir stands sell local products. The place can be easily reached by bus to Khon Kaen, get off at Ban Prasat (fare is 15 baht), then continue by motorcycle taxi (15 baht). Another transport option is from Phimai by bus to Korat (fare is 10 baht).
Wat Paa Lack Roi This impressive area is located 24 km north of Korat and displays a representation of the Buddhist heaven and hell.
