Phu Pra Bat Historical Park

This park is located in a rocky landscape with bizarre  sandstone formation and sparse tree coverage. It is criss-crossed by many foot paths and therefore an excellent place for walking or taking a stroll.
At the entrance to the Historical Park the Visitor Center, display boards, toilets and refreshment stands are situated. Open from 9 – 16 h, entrance fee 30 baht.
In case you did not receive any map, you can copy the attractions from the display boards in your preferred sequence (including the names!) and draw a sketch of their positions. The park is divided into nine walking areas. It will take a couple of days to discover the whole park. Many trails are marked with signposts in Thai as well as in English, however, visitors can get easily lost as there are many more walking paths which are not marked.

The most interesting area is walking area no. 3 which is located at the park entrance. You will need at least one hour to see all attractions: fantastic rock formations, often in the shape of mushrooms; natural overhanging rocks which served as temple roofs during the Dvaravati period (7th to 10th century); rock paintings with still easily recognizable men and oxen, 2000 – 4000 years old.
A place for picnic situated at the end of the park allows a beautiful view to the mountains of Laos. You are advised to bring drinking water when you go for longer excursions.
In the nearby Wat Phra Phutthabat Bua Bok the 45 m high stupa (1917–27) is erected above a footprint of Buddha which is a replica of the former stupa of That Phanom.
How to get there
From Nong Khai to Ban Phu (65 km) by bus no. 294 which runs from 8.30 – 14 h, every 30 minutes. The journey takes 2 hours, the fare is 42 baht (last bus back already about 15.30 h). From the bus station take a songthaew via Ban Tiu to the turn-off for the park (10 km, fare 15 baht). From here another 4 km on foot to the park entrance, or 3 km to the Wat.
If you are lucky you can hitch a ride. Otherwise you better charter in Ban Phu either a motorcycle taxi (50 baht) or a tuk-tuk (about 150 baht). An easy option is by motor cycle: from Nong Khai (79 km) or from Si Chiangmai (52 km).
From Udon Thani by bus from the bus station Rungsina Market, the trip takes 1 1/2 hours, the fare is 35 baht.
