THE Full Moon Party

Full Moon Party is an all-night party celebrated on Koh Phangan every month when the moon is full throughout the year. This party has gained a worldwide reputation over the years and attracts thousands of tourists who come to celebrate this extreme fun party once in their lifetime on Koh Phangan.

There are many tourists who come to Koh Phangan for Yoga practice, meditation or detoxification, but their numbers are small compared to the number of tourists who ride the ferry to Thong Sala for the Full Moon Party.

Most of the bars and nightclubs across Thailand close at 2 a.m. But Koh Phangan is an exception. There is no doubt that Phangan is one of the most famous destinations for party animals.

What makes Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan so popular in Thailand?

Full Moon Party (HatRinBeach)

Full Moon Party took place for the first time in 1987. It was someone's birthday and around 50 people attended the party. The beauty and atmosphere and, of course, the full moon vibe made the night a big success. So people decided to celebrate every month and the popularity grew and grew.
Note: The party people back then were hippies and freaks, people among the first to come to Thailand at a time when techno was just about to be invented.
With growing national and international popularity the visitor numbers grew, too. Hat Rin struggled to keep up with this development, as the infrastructure was not there.
Most freaks and hippies have now moved on to other places and left Hat Rin to the newer, hipper international jet set crowd.
Alcohol and drugs have been part of the party ever since the beginning and they are still nowadays (Don't forget: There are hefty fines on drugs in Thailand). But with the fame of the party there was also curiosity among the normal people. So today you can sometimes find more people there just looking around than people actually celebrating. Plus, the Thais in that area show the effects of years and years of party life. Only rarely do you find a smile here.
Up to 30000 people show up for the party. The bad side effects are obvious: Noise, masses of people, trash have turned a former paradise into a center of party and commerce.
If you've never seen it, go once. If you are looking for a good party, there are definitely better options.

The Full Moon Night is the only night when thousands of tourists come to “Koh Phangan”.

The once in a lifetime experience of the world famous “Full Moon Party” is something not to miss. Some people say the first few Full Moon Parties here were so beautiful. In Had Rin, once the sun has set, the full moon rises and makes the whole area truly impressive. Many writers and travellers came here and wrote about how wonderful it was to be here during the full moon period. The Full Moon Party has become famous and now draws a crowd from all over the world. During the low season (no rain), there will be at least 8 thousands people participating in this event. During the high season (no rain) the numbers rise to 30,000.

The night gets started at around 10 PM.

In the past 95% of the crowd during Full Moon Party are young foreigners but nowadays Koh Phangan has become a favorite destination for Thai youngsters. Around 10% of the crowd at the Full Moon Party are Thai.

Most of the foreigners plan to have a blast during the Full Moon Party and don't seem to care about walking around the party topless. Some girls just wear a bikini.

Before Entering the Party
Before the party starts tourists can enjoy some of the many provided services. Body painting with fluorescent colours is very popular. There are also a variety of accessories for sale like headbands, rings, necklaces or fluorescent accessories to let yourself glow during the party.

After joining the Full Moon Party, tourists will be amazed by many stands selling clothes, food, souvenirs and we must mention the famous “Alcohol Buckets”. There are many kinds of alcohol and boosters to choose from. The alcohol stands can be found along Had Rin beach.

Alcohol and Full Moon Party is a great combination. The party can’t be any fun if you are not drunk. And if you are not drunk, you do not dare to dance. But if you are too drunk and over your limit, the local authority provides a place to sleep. However, most of the drunk ones always pass out on the beach. But for those who are too drunk and cause a fight, they will be charged by the local police. Please keep in mind “you can be drunk but do not cause any trouble!”.

Along Had Rin beach you can find different bars with different music genres from Techno Dance, R&B, House to Hip Hop. There is something for everyone here. There is also a Fire Dancing Show which attracts a lot of people and if you want to know how your future will be, there is Psychic Reading Service waiting for you at the party.

Another activity followed by the party is 'making out' under the moon! This is Western culture which can be publicly seen during the party. The peak time of the Full Moon is around 2-3 a.m. and the party will carry on till the Sun rises the next day. There are also some after party places to go if you haven't had enough. This is a reality which happens in Thailand.

This is the new generation of tourism which has a both positive and negative feedback. The locals need to adapt themselves to these changes…

Nowadays, a quiet romantic full moon evening in Had Rin might be less important because the “Full Moon Party” is sadly all about drinking, dancing and getting wasted.
