The Surin Islands are one of the best dive sites in Thailand. The small group of islands is a national park since 1981. No hotels or resorts are on the islands, only a small National Park lodge and a restaurant. Koh Surin Nua and Koh Surin Tai are about 75 km west of the mainland in the Andaman Sea. They are covered with pristine jungle vegetation. The coastline sports various bays and coves some of which are bordered by beautiful white sandy beaches. The Surin Islands attract a growing number of day-trippers to the islands who engage in snorkeling and swimming. Some boats come solely for diving, too. On weekends and holidays especially Thais come to Surin for snorkeling. Only a handful beaches can be reached also by walking through the island on adventurous jungle trails.
The National Park Restaurant has become famous for excellent food, best when ordered by a guide for his tour group. A small kiosk sells some articles for daily life. The National Park staff does not speak or understand English well. Koh Surin is a diving destination for diving boats from Khao Lak or Phuket, so in the high season sometimes quite a few boats and divers can be seen at the various diving spots. The average sea depth is between 10 and 20 metres.
A few hundred sea gypsies, the Chao Le, live on the Surin Islands. They live from catching fish and providing longtail boat service around the islands and to the many beaches.
