Beaches in Koh Phangan


Koh Phangan has a long history. Some believe that the first group of people who lived on Koh Phangan were  Muslims from Nakhon Sri Thammarat or Pattani. The name “Phangan” itself is local dialect meaning “Sand Ridge”.
Koh Phangan is also known as a historical island and has been a favourite island of the Chakri Dynasty Kings. Three past kings and our present king have already visited Koh Phangan:

Nowadays, Koh Phangan is divided into 5 zones to facilitate tourists in accordance with their travel choices.

Zone 1:
This zone is ideal for those who like to travel in a modern way.

Had Nai Wok: Located 1 kilometre from Thong Sala on the West coast of the island. The white sand beach is 1 kilometre long. This beach is a good spot to see the sunset.

Had Thong Sala: Thong Sala is the biggest community on Koh Phangan and a business centre. The main pier is located here. There are many banks, travel agencies, hotels, restaurants and bars.
Had Ban Tai: Had Ban Tai has a very beautiful beach and from there you can see Koh Samui, Koh Tae Nai and Koh Tae Nok. The local market in Ban Tai is one of the oldest markets on Koh Phangan. On the fishing pier you can buy fresh fish and seafood from the locals. There are also many resorts which are always fully booked during Full Moon Party.

Had Ban Khai: This beach is located next to Had Ban Tai. The community here is Muslim. In the past this area used to be a gold mine. It is also not far from Had Rin and can be comfortably reached by public transport.

Had Hin Lor: Some parts of this beach are private. Many tourists prefer to come to this beach because it is not too busy.

Nai Wok Bay has a white sandy beach stretches between characteristic rocks at both ends.

The bay is fairly shallow, for swimming is best in high season. The water is very shallow and you can walk for hundreds of meters into the sea.
Nai Wok beach that can be reached by kayak, you can rent from there. If you prefer scuba diving, this is a good spot for your activity.

Nai Wok Bay is located on the southwest of Koh Phangan, is the long bay extending North from Thong Sala pier.

Thong Sala Beach is a hub of Koh Phangan.

Thong Sala Beach is the center of Songkran (water) festival. There are also shops, bars, restaurants, medical clinics, banks, post office, etc.
If you would like to stay these comfortable places as well as convenience of the pier, accommodation at Thong Sala is recommended. It consists mainly of large impersonal hotels and a couple of laid back guesthouses.

Ban Khai is a great spot of seeking solitude and great view over to Koh Samui.

The beach is wide and flanked by coconut palms inserted by a number of bungalow-style resorts. Ban Kai men "camping village", derived from the old day when gold miners used to spend their nights camping here.
Ban Khai Beach is good alternatives if you are attending the Full Moon Party and want to accommodate in a more relaxed, peaceful and quiet place than Hat Rin.

Ban Khai is a small village located between Thong Sala and Hat Rin.

This zone is ideal for those who like to enjoy the Full Moon Party

Had Bang Son: This beach is not far from Had Hin Lor. Some parts of this beach are privately owned. Many tourists prefer to come to this beach because it is not too busy.
Had Rin Nai and Had Rin Nok: These beaches are located at Moo 4 Ban Tai Sub-District and 12 kilometres from the district office. The beach is 2 kilometres long. Besides the beautiful beach, Had Rin is also famous for the Full Moon Party.

Had Seekantang: This beach has very beautiful white sand and clear water. It is suitable for those who prefer tranquillity. Tourists can enjoy snorkelling and the sunset. There is also one small beach called “Had Sila” which is ideal for relaxation.

Had Yuan: Located on the East coast of the island. There are no public roads and tourists must hire a boat from Had Rin to reach this beach. There is also a waterfall not far from the Had Yuan beach.

Had Thian (East): Located on the East coast of the island. There are no public roads and the tourists must hire a boat from Had Rin to reach this beach.

Had Wai Nam: This beach is quite small but its white sandy beach is truly beautiful. Tourists can enjoy swimming here.

Had Yao (East): Located on the East coast of the island. There are no public roads and the tourists must hire a boat from Had Rin to reach this beach. This beach is a good place for relaxing.

There are 2 parts: Hat Rin Nai and Hat Rin Nok, curved into 2 shapes for length 2 km.

Hat Rin Nok (sunrise)is the fullmoon party beach on the sunrise side of the cape. Here is good for sunbathing during the day and in the evenings, full of nightlife.
Hat Rin Nai (sunset) is the west side, fulfilled with several high-end resorts, more private, great for escaping the noise of the parties and relaxing in air con as well as a few cheapness. The beach is usually fairly deserted with the length of 1 km, suitable for sun bathing. Hat Rin Nai is near pier to the pier.

Hat Rin is situated on the south east of Koh Phangan.

Hat Yuan has a very secluded and relaxed feel. If you like stretching your legs for a walking adventure, you can head inland along the mountain paths.

Hat Yuan lies on the peaceful southeastern coast of Koh Phangan, 3 km south of Hat Yao (east) and 5 km from Hat Rin on the mountain path.

Ao Thong Nai Pan Noi and Ao Thong Nai Pan Yai: Ao Thong Nai Pan is located at Moo 5 Ban Tai Sub-District and 23 kilometres from downtown. This beach is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. It can be reached by car and by boat. During the rainy season this beach can be reached only by boat.

Had Than Sadet: This beach can be reached by both car and boat.The sand is white and there are many strange looking rocks.Not far from this beach The Sadet waterfall can be found. From October to January each year the waterfall can be reached by boat. Getting to the waterfall during the rainy season is fairly dangerous.

Had Thong Reng: This beach is fairly small. The sand is white and beautiful. It is suitable for swimming.

Thong Nai Pan Noi and Thong Nai Pan Yai are twin beaches, situated in the northeastern part of the island. They are the most popular beaches in the east and sunrise side of Koh Phangan. The beach has been a major on the traveling circuit for many years with beautiful landscape, great vibe and unique islander hospitality. Both beaches are the image of paradise with softly curved white sand bays surrounded by mountains covered in rich tropical rain forest.
Lately these beaches became fairly accessible with a steep but beautiful new road.
Thong Nai Pan Yai is longer but very quiet with white sand, good for swimming along the coastline, also has a decent set of rocks for experienced climbers.
This side of the island is still pretty wild, and the surrounding jungle is a haven for many exotic tropical creatures.

Zone 4
This zone is ideal for those who like snorkelling and learning about the fishing peoples lives.
Had Salad: This white sand beach is 800 metres long. It is good for swimming near the beautiful reef. It is also famous as a good diving site.

Had Mae Had: This beach is located at Moo 7 Ban Chaloklum and 15 kilometre from the district office. It is one of the most beautiful beaches on Koh Phangan. Tourists can reach this beach by boat or public transport. This beach is also very close to Koh Mah where the most beautiful reef can be found.

Had Tong Lang: This beach is a sandy beach and very calm.

Ao Chaloklum: This beach is located on the northern part of the island and is 1 kilometre long. There is a fishing village called “Chaloklum Village". The villagers produce seafood products. The most famous product is sun dried squid.

Had Khom: This beach is 2 kilometres from Ao Chaloklum. It is a good place for those who seek relaxation and a laid back vibe. The coral reef runs along the bay and is very famous for snorkelling. Another famous activity on this beach is fishing due to the diversity of fish.

Had Khuad: This beach is located north of this island. It’s well known for its white sand and calm beach. This beach can be reached by longtail boat from Chaloklum village.

Bottle Beach or Hat Khuat is one of the island most well-known beaches in Koh Phangan.

Bottle Beach is a half-circle beach on the north of Koh Phangan. Named Bottle Beach for its protected cove, and known for quiet isolation on an island known mostly for its riotous Full Moon Party.
There is also a poorly marked mountain trail leading to the beach and primitive road which the owners of the beach's guest houses will drive you down if the boats are not running. Good viewpoint is 30 minutes by trekking to the top, you will find Koh Tao and the wide blue ocean.

Chalok Lam Bay is Koh Phangan's second port, located in the north of the island, and also a major fishing village.
The beach is about 2.5 km long, not good for swimming. The eastern side of the beach is very beautiful and has a few small resorts.
Chalok Lam is mainly a fisherman village producing dried and fresh sea food, mainly fish and squid. It's still a hub for fishermen and their fishing boats anchored next to the pier and jetty.

Mae Hat Bay is a scenic area, famous for its excellent snorkeling and diving. It is very nice and wide beach linking to Koh Ma.

It has sunset views over Koh Ma and the waters and coral reef that surround it are designated as a Marine Park as they are so rich in sea life, with turtles and small reef sharks. At high tide a perfect deep water pool forms which is perfect for swimming, and when the sea water levels down you can walk across to reach Koh Ma.
There are quite a few resorts are primarily inexpensive and basic.

Mae Hat Bay is located about 3 km from Chalok Lum on the west coast corner of the island.

Zone 5
This zone is ideal for those who prefer tranquillity and are keen to learn the art of simple life

Had Plaay Laem: This beach is one of the most interesting spots to see the sunset on Koh Phangan. It is located 1.5 kilometres from Thong Sala. The atmosphere here is calm and great for snorkelling. There is plenty of accommodation available along the beach.

Had Wok Tum or Ao Wok Tum: This beach is located not so far from Had Plaay Laem and is a fishing village. The skill of longtail boat assembly can be seen here. There is one viewpoint called “Khao Hin Nok” located between Had Plaay Laem and Ao Wok Tum. From this viewpoint, you can see Koh Tae Nok and Koh Tae Nai.

Had Hin Kong: This beach is next to Ao Wok Tum. When the tide is low the villagers like to go and catch shell fish which are abundant here. A shell fish statue can be seen in the middle of the bay.

Laem Son: This area used to be tin mine and when the mine was exhausted, the place became a beach. 

Had Sri Thanu: The local fishermen always use this beach as a shelter when a storm comes. The beach is calm and there are many accommodations and restaurants provided.

Had Chao Pao: This beach is on the top list of the most beautiful beaches in Koh Phangan. The sand is white and clean. There are also many facilities such as accommodation, grocery and internet shops along the beach.

Had Son: This beach is privately owned by Had Son Resort. The beach is a white sand beach. It is good for swimming and snorkelling.

Had Yao: This long beach is white sand. It is located 15 kilometres from Thong Sala and on the East coast of Koh Phangan. This is one of the second most beautiful beaches. Tourists can enjoy swimming and snorkelling. There are also many facilities too. 

Had Thian: This beach is located between Had Yao and Had Salad. The sand here is mixed with corals. It is very calm and good for snorkelling.

Hat Thian has a wondrous coral reef just offshore that is sure to dazzle even the most discerning underwater aficionado, so it is a very nice for diving and snorkeling.
Hat Thian has a shallow seabed, the best times for swimming are between the months of November and April.

Hat Thian (west) is located on the western shore near Hat Kruat beach and the popular Hat Yao (west) beach.

Hat Son is the white sandy bay on the popular sunset coastline.


Hat Son is a smaller more contained area that is ideal for snorkeling. The coral reef that stretches along the beach sustains an abundance of corals and marine life.
The low-key atmosphere is perfect for relaxing and enjoying the clear blue-green water, with shady coconut palms.

Hat Son beach is in north west of Koh Phangan.

Chao Pao Beach is a small coves and bays, is great for exploring and swimming. There are extensive coral reefs offshore for snorkeling, and an inland lake behind the cape called Laem Son for swimming and relaxing.

Chao Pao Beach has beautiful sunset views and softly curved bay. The sand is white and fine and the sea shelf is steeper before the reef. The reef is about 100 meters from the beach and once crossed the rich coral and vibrant sea life are an attraction for divers and snorkelers.

Sri Thanu Beach is a fishing port but can only handle squid boats and longtail boats.

The area around Sri Thanu is very relaxed and cheap food, and a few restaurants.
On the northern end of Sri Thanu Beach the beach is split by a river estuary and has to be reached by footbridge, the sand is plentiful and the beach wide and good for swimming.

Sri Thanu Beach is located on the north west coast of Koh Phangan.

Ao Kong Beach is a narrow bay with a 2 km.

There are only a couple of bungalows mainly rented for long-staying. The coral reef lies about 300 meters off the beach, is good for scuba diving but is not suitable for swimming. You can hire a boat to Koh Ma, Koh Kong or off for fishing.

Hin Kong Beach is located at the west of Koh Phangan.

Wok Tum Beach is a mostly undeveloped and quite bay, with its stretching white sands, provides a perfect contrast to the azure waves that lap upon the shore.

The coral reef lies about 300 meters off the beach which extend to 700 meters. Mangrove trees line the beaches and give the place a real untouched feel, great for catching a sunset in solitude.


Wok Tum Beach is located on the southwest shore of Koh Phangan.

Plaaylaem Beach is a white sand beach at the base of Hin Nok Mountain.

The bay is very fairly shallow preceding the reef that lies about 80 m away. Over the reef there are corals for snorkeling and kayaking around the boulders is a popular activity.

Plaaylaem Beach is in the south west of Koh Phangan.
