The province of Surat Thani is the largest province in the South with 12,892sq.km. and 985,000 inhabitants. In former times the provincial capital was called Ban Don and many locals still use this name until today. Surat, its short name, is a less interesting city, mainly just a transit place on the way to Ko Samui. The majority of tourists do not have any reason to stay here longer, except for waiting for the next connection.
During long waiting times you can relax in a park on the island of Lamphu and enjoy the Thai leisure time flair or you can join a tour through the canals of the city and visit floating villages and tiny coconut islands situated in the river Tapi; information about these tours is available in travel agencies (hardly anybody speaks English though!). A large interesting wat with friendly monks is situated diagonally opposite of Samui Tour .
