Phimai

The small town of Phimai is situated on a side road, 59 km northeast of Korat. Several Khmer ruins dated back to the 11th-13th centuries have been discovered inside the town and in its surroundings. The large temple complex,  Prasat Hin Phimai, has been (partly unprofessional) restored and is nowadays one of the most beautiful Khmer temples in Thailand. The complex was declared the Phimai Historical Park.
During those times the Khmer had extended their influence further to the west. The temple which embraces Hindu as well as Buddhist elements is built in the typical Khmer style and gives evidence that Phimai used to be an important Khmer center. The central prang symbolises the holy mountain and the seat of the gods, which can be reached on four routes from all the four directions of the compass. Four stone entrance gates allow the access to the sanctuary which is surrounded by a rectangular wall. Even during public holidays this beautiful and quiet place is not overcrowded. And you can enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and fill your senses. Open daily from 7.30 h –18 h, entrance fee 40 baht.
Outside of the southern city gate Pratu Chai a few smaller excavation sites are situated. The large museum located at the bridge displays a part of the finds, among them are numerous Buddha statues, lingams and particularly beautiful lintels decorated with stone carvings. It also provides a good overview of the art history. The real show piece of the museum is a stone statue of King Jayavarman VII of Angkor Thom which was discovered in Prasat Phimai. Open daily from 9 h – 16 h, entrance fee 30 baht.
A beautiful Banyan tree (Ficus bengalensis) whose branches and numerous aerial roots cover a space of 50 m in diameter, is situated in the northeast of Phimai, 1.5 km away. The wide-spreading 350-year-old tree is inviting for picnic, especially for families with children. In the cool shade of its huge canopy a small temple is located which is called the Sai Ngam Spirit House. Just beside of it some fortune tellers (palm readers) can be found. A large covered food market is opposite the temple.
