Chaiyaphum

The provincial capital of Chaiyaphum located at the edge of the Korat plateau has 58000 inhabitants. The city lies 342 km from Bangkok and 118 km north of Korat, approximately half way between Bangkok and Nong Khai. Only seldom tourists come here and the locals are friendly, but not intrusive. Besides the daily fruit and vegetable market the city does not have much to offer. The new Chinese Temple displays an amazing array of colours.
1.5 km east of the city center the small 12th-century Khmer ruin Prang Ku, the remains of a hospital, is situated in a park east of the city center. A Buddha statue from the Dvaravati period is highly revered, as it is said to bring good health.
On the full moon day in April bathing ceremonies and an exuberant fair take place.
