The sleepy and typically Thai seaside resort of Cha-am is located 40 km south of the provincial capital Phetchaburi and 25 km north of the world renowned seaside resort Hua Hin.
Cha-am Beach was developed on a large scale into a recreation center for families from Bangkok. Settlements with huge apartment blocks, business roads, large hotels and a new bypass highway have been constructed.

The town stretches inland west of the former main road until the railway track. Narathip Road leads from the train station to the beach where you reach the coast road, Ruam Chit Road, running parallel to the miles-long sandy beach. Small and large hotels, apartment blocks with guest houses, bungalow villages, private weekend villas, souvenir and grocery shops, food stalls and restaurants are located close to each other at the western side of the road. At the seaside, Thai holiday makers relax on the beach, having a picnic, playing cards or enjoying loud music sitting on deckchairs close together under sunshades. Tall casuarina trees give welcome shade.
Everywhere you can rent tandems or bicycles. The water sport activities of most Thai people are limited to walking in ankle-deep waters, therefore neither surf boards nor boats are available for rent. Inflated tubes, however, are plentiful for rent. Unfortunately the peaceful atmosphere is already disturbed by jet skis. Some Europeans feel out of place here, especially at weekends. Yet it seems that Norwegian people really love this atmosphere. North of the fishing village with a pier reaching far out to the sea, more hotels are situated. In a relatively remote location south of the river, about 15 kilometers before Hua Hin, there are large hotels as well. They can be reached via access roads from the main road.
It is said that King Mongkut was chased away from here by blood-hungry mosquitoes. He had just built a summer palace and had planned to spend the first summer season here, when hordes of mosquitoes came over the king and his cortege. Even with the help of all local children the seaside resort could not be saved at that time.
