Lamphun is one of the oldest cities in Thailand. It has been founded in 660 A.D. as the Capital of the Haripunchai Kingdom. The first queen was Chama Devi.
In 1281 King Mengrai annexed the kingdom and it became part of Lanna.
Wat Phrathat Haripunchai with its gilded Chedi is still one of the most important temples in Thailand. The Chedi was built in 897 and the temple in 1157.
Opposite the temple the National Museum shows its exhibition.
Today Lamphun is a typical Thai small town, fast growing due to its huge neighbour Chiang Mai.
