Surin in the Northeast of Thailand (Isarn)

The provincial capital of Surin with its 41,000 inhabitants is situated 450 km from Bangkok. Every year on the third weekend in November an invasion of tourist takes place who come for the Elephant Round Up. More than 100 elephants are summoned for this great spectacle. They show their strength and skills in parades and competitions. Since the government imposed a nationwide logging ban on 11th January 1989, working elephants are hardly needed anymore to remove tree trunks in the jungle. This created drastic economic problems for their owners.
The Museum lies 5 km south of the city on H214 and is not really worth to be visited. Surin is famous for its hand woven silk. You can learn about the complete process of silk production in the villages Khwao Sinarin and Jomran.
