The Tarutao National Park is situated in the southwestern corner of Thailand and it encompasses an area of 1400 km2 in the crystal clear Andaman Sea as well as 51 islands, almost all of them are uninhabited. In former times, pirates and smugglers used the islands as a haunt and hideout, today the national park has set up check points in the danger-prone places. The meaning of “Tarutao“ in Malay is: old, mysterious and primitive.
Real nature lovers, who do not mind to pay 400 Baht entrance fee, are delighted by various islands with long untouched sandy beaches and mountains covered with tropical rain forest, mangrove swamps and stalactite caves. This world of islands is really quiet and only on Koh Lipe, which is inhabited by Chao Leh, a significant travelers' center for all ages has been established.
The peak season lasts from November to February; accommodation are closed from May to October due to the monsoon and the boats do not operate. Apart from weekends and holidays the islands are very lonely.
Accommodation and Food
Koh Tarutao and Koh Adang feature simple huts from the national park and simple tents for rent. For a fee of 10 Baht campers can pitch their tent everywhere in the national park, but they have to be prepared for pests. Both main islands offer sufficient food, yet not as cheap and definitely not in the variety and quality as on the mainland or on Koh Lipe. Therefore it is advisable to bring some emergency provisions.
Miscellaneous
In the meantime, there are money changers, a post service and electricity supply in the evenings. Nevertheless, travelers should bring a sufficient amount of cash, torch lamps and batteries.
Entrance - 400 Baht per person (not for Koh Lipe).
Information and reservation for national park bungalows at www.dnp.go.th/parkreserve/asp/style2/default.asp?npid=7&lg=2.
Sandflies can be found on all beaches with fine sand. For this reason, some travelers escaped quickly from the islands. At times jelly fish swim in the water, they are unpleasant but not dangerous.
