Rafflesia kerrii flower of Khao Sok

About 20 years ago the first specimens of Rafflesia (Rafflesia kerrii meijer, in Thai: buah poot), the world's largest single flower, were found inside and outside of Khao Sok National Park.
The Rafflesia grows parasitically in a large host liana (Tetrastigma). The flower is bowl-shaped and brick red and it has a yellowish spadix. With a diameter of nearly one meter it belongs to the largest flowers on earth.
The Rafflesia blossoms all year round, while it takes nine months for the small bulb to grow and to develop into a flower.
If you are interested in this plant you can book a guided tour in any guesthouse (fixed price: 600 Baht per person).
The beautiful palm tree Kerridoxia elegans (also known as Langkow palm tree) is an attraction for botanists.
