For snorkelers Ko Tao is an outstanding destination. The east coast in particular offers intact biotopes with diverse corals and colorful fish, for example in front of Ao Tanote. At the quiet and secluded Hin Wong beautiful shells can be spotted. For snorkelers on the south coast it is more difficult as they have to pass either low lying coral reefs or rock barriers before they reach a suitable depth of the water. If you intend to swim to the offshore dive rocks at Shark Island you have to follow the tide table and wait for quiet waters as the currents around the island can become dangerous.
The best snorkeling sites are in the southeast at Bai Sai Daeng Rock, near Shark Islands, in Ao Tanote and around Ko Nang Yuan. Rental of snorkeling equipment, which is mostly in bad condition, in some resorts for free but others charge 50-100 Baht each for mask, snorkel and fins. The tour around the island starts from Sai Ri at 9 am and there are about 5 stops for snorkeling. Return at approximately 4 pm. The price is 300 Baht per person (no trips during rough seas).
