The Chao Lay (Fisherman)'s Boat Floating Festival


The Chao Lay (Fisherman)'s Boat Floating Festival is held annually during the middle of the 6th and 11th lunar month. The groups of fishermen from Rawai and Baan Saba would cerebrate theirs on he 13th and the group from Sirey Island has theirs on he 14th. The fishermen from Laem La (from the north of Phuket0 have a special "Sadohkroh" ceremony which is similar to Loy Kratong. They would assemble a wooden boat and place human hair and nails and a wooden human doll inside. The whole thing is then left adrift into the ocean as an act to float away sorrow and bad luck. The ceremony is concluded with a dance around the boat called "Rong Ngeng".
