Many people living in rural areas especially in the populous northeast were forced to move to large cities to look for jobs due to the changing economic situation. Prices on the world market for agricultural products dropped. Workers lost their jobs in the face of a reduction in export receipts and increased mechanization. This rural exodus created a new problem in Thailand in recent years – unemployment.
Currently the unemployment rate lies between 1.5% and 2.5%. There is still a high demand for employees in the industrial and hospitality sector, but many job seekers lack the necessary qualifications and skills. The same applies for graduates whose rate of unemployment is increasing. Many students choose their studies in the hope of gaining high status positions in the government sector. Favorite fields of studies are philosophy, physiology and law, while industry is crying out for engineers. However, the situation is slowly improving.
Arbeitsplätze im Tourismus Wenn ein Kellner in einem Restaurant Ihre freundlichen Thai-Worte nicht versteht, muss dies keineswegs an Ihrer mangelhaften Aussprache liegen. Nein, er ist mit großer Wahrscheinlichkeit ein Gastarbeiter aus Myanmar oder Kambodscha, der erst kürzlich zugezogen ist. Ohne die vielen, von der Regierung völlig ignorierten Gastarbeiter gäbe es weder in Phuket noch Koh Samui, weder auf Koh Chang noch in Khao Lak touristische Betriebe. Selbst auf kleinen Touristeninseln wie Koh Tao oder Koh Phayam stammt die überwiegende Zahl der Angestellten aus den armen Nachbarländern. Sie arbeiten für einen sehr geringen Lohn, bekommen aber immerhin drei Mahlzeiten am Tag und eine Schlafstelle. Die meisten sind nicht angemeldet, bezahlen keine Sozialversicherung und können keine freie Arzt- oder Krankenhausbehandlung in Anspruch nehmen.
Das häufig vorgebrachte Argument, wir Touristen schaffen Arbeitsplätze, zieht in Thailand nicht, wenn 8 von 10 im Tourismus Tätigen illegal ins Land geschleust werden müssen. Dass diese Gastarbeiter ein weitaus höheres Bildungsniveau als ihre Arbeitgeber haben, da viele im Heimatland die Uni besuchten, und dass ihre Kinder ohne reguläre schulische Ausbildung aufwachsen, verschärft die Situation noch. So mancher sieht hier eine Zeitbombe ticken.
