Currency
The country's currency is Baht which is divided into 100 Satang. Coins in circulation include 10, 5, 2 and 1 Baht. Coins with a nominal value of 50, 25 and 10 Satang are in circulation but only accepted at 7-eleven stores and banks.
Banknotes are 1,000 Baht (gray/rainbow-colored), 500 Baht (violet), 100 Baht (red), 50 Baht (blue), 20 Baht (green) and – very rarely - 10 Baht (brown) are in circulation. Newer banknotes have a different design; nevertheless both of them are valid.
Banks
Thailand has a highly developed and effectively working banking system. Banks are open from Monday to Friday from 8.30 am to 3.30 pm. Additionally, most banks provide counters for money exchange in tourist areas. Besides regular opening hours, these counters open until 8 pm even on weekends and public holidays.
In Thailand, exchange rates do not differ from city to city or in different provinces as in some other Asian countries: Throughout the country the current rates are applied.

Cash
The exchange rate for cash is slightly lower than the rate for traveler's checks. Hard currencies and currencies that are known worldwide can be easily exchanged into Thai Baht at any bank.
US dollars with higher nomination, particularly 50 and 100 dollar banknotes have a higher exchange rate than 20, 10, 5 and 1 dollar notes. When you buy foreign currency be aware that you are given “clean and spotless” notes. If banknotes have writing on them or they are torn and dirty - they may not be accepted.
Traveler's Checks
If you want to play safe it is better to purchase traveler's checks from American Express, Bank of America or Thomas Cook instead of bringing cash even though the bank will charge you a commission of 1 % of the amount. The exchange rate for traveler's checks is slightly higher than for cash.
Traveler's checks in US dollar, Euro or Swiss Francs can be easily exchanged. When cashing traveler's checks you have to show your passport. A tax of 3 Baht and a processing fee of 20 Baht has to be paid. Some hotels may not charge a processing fee, but their exchange rate is much lower compared to banks.
Credit/debit Cards
International accepted credit cards such as American Express, Diners Club, Master Card/Euro card and Visa are accepted by all banks in Thailand and also by a large and growing number of hotels, restaurants and shops. However, smaller shops charge an additional fee between 3 to 5 % - contrary to the terms and conditions.
Furthermore, with a Visa Card or Master Card/Euro card you can draw cash in Baht from numerous ATM cash machines but will have to pay a 150 Baht fee per transaction.
