To Bangkok, an easy and comfortable option is provided with the joint ticket, 500 or 550 Baht per person:

The cheapest way to Bangkok (maybe not everybody's choice) is to go by boat to Chumphon at 10 am, 200 Baht per person, then take the Rapid 174 at 7.35 pm, 112 Baht (3rd class seat). Arrival in Bangkok Samsen Station at 4.46 am.
If you go by train to Bangkok, you can either take the Sprinter during the day or any night train that will arrive in the early morning.
Normally it is possible to catch the Sprinter in Chumphon at 1.27 am. It arrives in Bangkok Samsen Station at 8.27 pm and from there you can easily take a taxi to Khaosan Road.
