Tsunami Memorial Tour

The Tsunami Museum Khao Lak in co-operation with T-Tour Khao Lak arranges an interesting tour to see the memorials of the Tsunami.

Five options to see the sites in your preferred way:
1) Print this website, purchase "The Best Khao Lak Map 2015" for 50 Baht, and rent a motorcycle for a day to explore the Tsunami affected area on your own.
2) Read this website, then charter a taxi to take you to Nam Khem to see the top 3 Tsunami Memorials.
3) Purchase the brochure "Tsunami Memorial Tour" for 50 Baht from the "Tsunami Museum Khao Lak", rent the minibus and a guide (English/Thai/German speaking) from T-Tour to visit all the sites you are interested in.

The Tsunami Museum Khao Lak was reopened on July 4, 2015, in the new location along the road to the Police Boat 813. This resulted in a strong increase of visitors which in turn motivated its initiators to improve the museum considerably.

Ton Chong Fah Waterfall
Most people from Bang Niang who fled from the giant wave with motor cycles or by pick up truck, took the road beside Bang Niang Temple in order to get to the waterfall where they would be safe. Also the survivors on the trees climbed down after an hour or more and rushed up the road towards Ton Chong Fah Waterfall.
Among many others Ines Reller, the hero from Sita Garden who had massively warned tourists that a Tsunami was coming, spent the night beside the road leading to the waterfall. Desperate survivors who called out the names of their loved ones who had disappeared and sobbing victims who were badly hurt surrounded the lucky survivors who escaped the waters unscathed. These survivors
Ines will always remember those locals who did their utmost to help the survivors around them. She will never forget the barman Lanta who acted like an angel for the desperate people. Later she would send some donation to him using the account of "Hilfe fuer Khao Lak".

Viewpoint Resort 2004
A few minutes after the Tsunami struck in Nang Thong the first survivors climbed up the steep gravel road to the Viewpoint Resort that consisted of over 20 bungalows, a restaurant, and a swimming pool. For survivors who had escaped the water this became a second nightmare as the sharp gravel cut their feet open. The police soon after directed all survivors from the main street up to the resort because more waves were expected.
Finally more than 300 survivors gathered on the top of the hill, all in terrible despair watching the disastrous effect of the Tsunami below them. Stefan Kuehn, the German videographer, took some shocking shots of the resorts underneath.
A large number of survivors huddled on the hill with no clothes on their body. Monty the Tailor climbed down the mountain, disobeyed the police orders, opened a tailor shop along the main road, and brought sarong cloth up to the mountain. The men and women without clothes were very thankful for this courageous act and never forgot it. Monty the Tailor was one of the hundreds of small heroes in Khao Lak who helped the victims or prevented further desaster. He was honored as a VIP guest at the 10 Year Tsunami Commemoration in Bang Niang on December 26, 2014.
Most of the survivors spent the night on the top of the hill.
The Englishman Dennis from Bang Niang climbed down in order to search for his wife who worked in Palm Andaman Resort at the beach of Bang Niang. He could not find her and finally climbed the jungle behind Sea Dragon Dive Center where he spent the night.
