Every year new boat lines are put into service.
No boats leave Koh Tao during rough seas, which can occur in any season.
From Chumphon (Tayang-Pier or Lomprayah-Pier):
The night boat leaves at midnight, 200 Baht per person, traveling time: 6 hours. Bamboo mats are provided for sleeping and are quite uncomfortable; boat tickets and transportation to the pier is arranged by local guest houses and travel agencies. Back to Chumphon at 10 pm, 5 1/2 hour journey, pick-ups are waiting at the pier. From November to mid-January this boat only operates in quiet seas.
Lomprayah Katamaran, (T) 077-558212, at 7 am and 1 pm,  550 Baht per person, traveling time: 1 1/2 hours, back to Chumphon at 10 am and 3 pm, (T) 077-456176 with connecting bus at the pier to Bangkok, 650 to 850 Baht (arrives at 8 pm and 1 am respectively); if you go to Bangkok by train, you are able to catch the sprinter (1.27 pm) under normal circumstances.
Koh Tao Cruiser, (T) 09-5874107, at 7 am, traveling time: 2 1/2 hours, back to Chumphon at 10.30 am, (T) 077-456064 with connecting bus to Bangkok at 1.30 pm (arrives at 8 pm).
Songserm Express boat, (T) 506205, departs at 7 am, 3 hour journey, 400 Baht per person. This boat continues to Koh Phangan. Back to Chumphon from Koh Tao at 2.30 pm, 400 Baht per person (arrives approximately at 6 pm). Connecting tickets including an overpriced bus to Bangkok for 850 Baht (arrives at 5 am).

Warning
Due to a vehement letter to our team we need to inform you that you will be in an acute life-threatening situation when you take this express boat in waves of more than 2 meters. Not only the passengers but the crew as well are scared to death every time a wave breaks. Passengers and luggage get soaked. The stench of diesel fumes inside is almost unbearable. The emergency exits cannot be opened. The upper deck is neither equipped with seats nor a railing to hold on to. According to locals all previous accidents were kept silent. They advise passengers to take the morning boat during the months of monsoon as the storms usually increase in the afternoon.
