Coming from Bangkok the best way to go to Koh Tao is via Chumphon. Travel agencies add a fee of about 40 Baht to the ticket price.
A joint ticket usually includes an uncomfortable emergency accommodation, transfer to the harbor and the Songserm Express Boat to Koh Tao. A cheaper option is to buy a train ticket to Chumphon and there you can buy a ticket for another boat to Koh Tao. It is more convenient to spend the rest of the night in a guest house in Chumphon which arranges the transfer to the harbor as well.
The trip to Koh Tao via Surat Thani, Koh Samui and Koh Phangan is very time consuming.
