From Ban Saladan to the East Coast

It is easy to explore Koh Lanta  yourself as the roads were all paved since 2011. You can either rent a motorbike or a small car or jeep to start the tour around the island. If you are not an experienced motorbike driver it is safer to rent a car.

Two suggestions of where to rent a car or bike, you can also ask at the front desk of your accommodation.

Mangrove Forest Park on the East Coast is a small conservatory for mangroves. Friendly staff take you through the mangrove forest by boat and tell you all about this complicated and very fragile Eco system.

You can now either go back to Saladan turning left and the road takes you back to  Saladan in about 15 minutes. On your way there you can stop at the Monkey School and the Mangrove Forest,  then pass the car ferry pier and the police box and Ban Saladan is just ahead of you.

Or you take a right and continue to Lanta Old Town. The former Capitol of the island, as all the boats landed here. Now Old Town, also called Lanta Pier is still a place of interest as most of the Chinese population live here and the boats to the East depart from there. For further information please see Route 2.

Tham Mai Kaeo (Diamond Cave) (ถ้ำเข้าถ้ำแ้ก้วไม้เพรช) (KohLanta)

Tham Khao Mai Kaeo(Diamond Cave) is close to Klong Nin and was discovered several years ago. Follow the signs before the turning to Klong Nin Beach and turn right. You can find a small settlement at the entrance to the cave. From there a small footpath through intact forest with trees of 50 meters high leads you to the caves. You have to climb over bamboo ladders and steep steps that lead from one cave to the next. The cave system consists of three caves. We recommend taking a guide from the village who will take you there safely and the price of 200 baht includes a torch.

After the pause go downhill to the t-junction and take a right here, you are now heading into Lanta Old Town if you take the first or second left turn towards the water. You pass old Chinese Houses and you are right in the middle of Lanta Pier, Old Town is often referred to. The houses and restaurants are built on stilts over the water. Why not take a stroll through the village before continuing your journey to Ban Sang Kha Ou.
If you want to explore the islands in the East contact Susanna at Sun Island Tours. They do long tail boat trips, camping tours and also shuttle services to Koh Ngai.
