Outlaw taxi drivers - not a safe way to travel

Using an outlaw taxi driver is not a safe way to travel!
Please believe me: Using an outlaw taxi driver for your transfer from Phuket Airport to your hotel in Phuket or Khao Lak is NOT a safe way to travel any more.
Every day accidents happen between Phuket Airport and Khao Lak. If an outlaw taxi driver is involved in an accident, his passengers are at the mercy of the police, because the driver will disappear. The new government and the army are trying their best to keep outlaw taxi drivers away from the airport, but too many tourists still use them in order to save 5 or 10 Dollars.
We wish all tourists of Khao Lak that they will never be involved in an accident with an outlaw taxi driver as this could be the beginning of a terrible nightmare.

"Outlaw taxis" with a normal number plate are tolerated by the police as long as the car owners pay various fees (up to 1600 Baht per month).
As accidents involving unprofessional taxis happen "only" once or twice per week on the crowded road from Khao Lak to Phuket, most of their customers can enjoy a cheaper ride.
The few hapless tourists involved in an accident, though, are at the mercy of the police. The outlaw driver who normally is NOT the owner of the car will run away.
The tourists will have a real problem because they are considered the never ending source of money.
They will be asked to pay:
-- chuay (help) money for any person involved in the accident (handed over in an envelope as a sign of respect for the other person, not less than 20,000 Baht for each person),
-- medical expenses for any injured person (to be paid in cash to the hospital: an advance amount and a final payment),
-- repair cost for any vehicle involved (to be paid in advance to the repair shop according to the estimate),
-- transport cost for any person summoned to the police,
-- compensation for income lost due to the accident,
-- lawyers fees for the other party and your own (several thousand to several hundred thousand Baht),
-- a fine according to the criminal code of Thailand,
-- fees for translators, witnesses, any number of helpers,
-- for civil cases even the cost of the court case,
-- bail out money if the court orders your imprisonment.

All this adds up easily to over 10,000 Dollars or Euros, an amount that is not available from any credit card.
If a person dies due to the accident, the tourists can be asked easily the tenfold amount and the court case can take several months to be finalized, during which time the tourist is not allowed to leave the country.
No insurance will pay, because the car insurance becomes invalid when a private car is used as a taxi.
Can your embassy help? -- Yes, somewhat. They have a list of lawyers whom they consider helpful. These lawyers are Thais and NOT from your home country. They may or may not speak English, but they will normally ask a first installment of 200,000 Baht before they come to talk to you in person.

Car with normal number plate: no taxi or an "Outlaw Taxi".

The driver of this private car was 95% innocent in a terrible accident, that left the motorcycle driver dead and his passenger blind on one eye.
The first class car insurance and the third party insurance covered 80% of the hospital cost plus all damages.
The nearly innocent car driver had to pay 450,000 Baht for the lawyer, 430,000 Baht for the families and over 100,000 Baht for various other expenses.
Only a strong company behind a taxi driver can cover all such costs and prevent the ruin of the driver.
This makes it understandable why often a driver takes flight and leaves his passengers alone to explain to the police why their baggage got into a private car and who of them has driven the "stolen" car.

Since 2001 the Internet Booking Service Khao Lak employed two taxi drivers from Phuket with a legal taxi license, for transfers from Khao Lak to Phuket Airport. Luckily none of the taxi drivers was ever involved in an accident.
Aware of the growing accident rate with outlaw taxi drivers from Khao Lak to Phuket, Internet Booking Service Khao Lak undertook the difficult task to acquire the first legal taxi license for one taxi driver from Khao Lak, Khun Pimmanee.
It took over 10 months for the bureaucratic march through dozens of government offices and over 200,000 Baht of unexpected expenses (no bribes) before Khun Pimmanee obtained the first legal taxi license for a taxi driver from Khao Lak, the green license plate "Number 1".
Now, 13 years later, there are enough taxi drivers in Khao Lak with a legal license and a first class taxi insurance so that no tourist has to run the unpredictable risk of using an outlaw taxi driver back to Phuket Airport.
Please take a legal and safe taxi from Phuket Airport to Khao Lak:

Taxi Number 171 (เท็กซี) (KhaoLak)

Miss Pimmanee (nickname Jiab) obtained the first legal taxi license in Khao Lak in 2009.
It took 10 long, long months to get the green number plate with the number 1 (later by government order changed to 67). She had to pass a difficult taxi driver course and had to fulfill many unforeseen requirements like a real garage for her car. Her taxi has a first class insurance (300 Baht per trip).
Miss Pimmanee is very friendly and speaks enough English to communicate with her passengers.
The transfer from Phuket Airport to Khao Lak costs 1700 Baht per trip for 2 persons.
If passengers get delayed she wants to be informed by a telephone call or by SMS.
If you did not book your hotel with the help of Internet Booking Service Khao Lak, you may still use the taxi service of Khun Pimmanee by mailing to khaolaktransfer@gmail.com
