On first glance at the map Khao Lak does not look like an ideal base for tours into the countryside. Nestled between the jungle mountains to the east and the Andaman Sea to the west, it takes over 10 km to the south or the north before a road inland can be taken. But the opposite is true: there is hardly any other tourist destination worldwide that offers as many attractions to visit as Khao Lak. In Khao Lak you may rent a motorcycle from dozens of rental companies. Most motorcycles are fairly new and in good shape.
On the website www.khaolakbeach.com/excursions.htm I published for several years three worthwhile excursions from Khao Lak by car, jeep, bike, or motorbike. The favourite for tourists was the Kapong Loop which I describe in great detail so that (almost) nothing can go wrong. This route leads to two small waterfalls, a hot spring, two temples, a boarding school, and an old town, all embedded in tropical jungle and traditional rural landscape. On this 150 km self-drive trip adventurous tourists can experience more about Thailand than on week long booked group tours with well trained guides of renowned tour agencies.
The Phang Nga Loop on the website www.khaolakbeach.com/excursions.htm is the second tour for adventurous self-drivers. I did not hear from anybody who has actually done it.
